Oval plaque with hippopotamus and Hathor sistrum
Description
More images

This seal amulet is decorated on both sides. Side A depicts a hippopotamus behind a papyrus stem with a branch at the top. On side B, a Hathor sistrum is located between two papyrus plants with falling stems. They are placed on patterns resembling 'tyet' marks (part of the 'wedjat' eye ). The morphology of the plate and the connecting lines on the papyrus stems point to a Canaanite origin, although the sistrum is depicted in its Egyptian form (central element flanked by 'antennae'). The hippo is not conventionally represented either. It may therefore be an imitation of a 'Hyksos' model.
