Starting from the end of the Old Kingdom, the Egyptians placed various figurines and maquettes in the tombs. According to their magical beliefs, these objects were useful to the deceased and protected them from the attack of 'Evil' in the underworld. There are mourners among the statues and figurines. The Museum of Brussels possesses four terracotta figurines of mourners, dating from the 1st Intermediate Period. The women are very particular: they beat their naked chests, raise their hands in despair or are bent over because of their suffering. This second piece depicts a mourner, dressed in a straight robe, with her right hand holding her head.
