During the New Kingdom scarabs appeared with inscription that could be read, on the basis of the phonetic value of the signs, as cryptograms of the name Amon or Amon Ra. The cobra, for example, has the phonetic value “i”, the duck “mn” and the solar disk “re”. Thus, the signs could form the name “imn ra”.
